New this year is the K-12 Education will have their own Pop-Out Conference on February 8th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with keynote, panelist, and sessions just for our K-12 distance educators. Attendance to just the Pop-Out has a reduced registration fee.

Keynote Speakers

Russ Poulin is the executive director for WCET – the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies, which has member institutions in every state and a few other countries. He guides the team’s work in supporting effective practices and policies for the postsecondary use of digital learning. He is a sought-after expert and leader regarding federal and state policies and emerging policy uses of educational technologies. Russ was honored to have represented the distance education community on federal negotiated rulemaking committees and subcommittees. He has received recognition for his contributions from the Online Learning Consortium, the Presidents’ Forum, Excelsior College, and the National University Technology Network.

Dr. Davis Headshot

Dr. Van L. Davis serves as the chief strategy officer for WCET (WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies). Prior to joining WCET, he served as founder and principal at Foghlam Consulting where he worked with colleges, universities, and nonprofits on digital learning, strategic planning, higher education policy, and research. Van has over 25 years of experience in higher education. During his career, he has served as a faculty member and academic administrator, director of innovations at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and associate vice president for higher education policy and research at Blackboard Inc. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in 20th Century United States History with an emphasis in civil rights from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. in History from Southwestern University. Van has devoted his career to improving educational access and affordability for students and has led numerous projects such as the development of Texas’ adult degree completion initiative (GradTX), Texas’ statewide course redesign project which leveraged adaptive courseware, and the development of the first competency-based baccalaureate degrees at Texas public institutions. He currently focuses on artificial intelligence and federal distance education regulations.

Dr. Donna Parise is a computer science teacher at a research and development school. She pilots many technology projects for our district. She also serves as support staff for her teachers, and she teaches computer specials classes to the students in our school. Her school is a Microsoft Showcase School.  She is a Microsoft Certified Educator and Microsoft Innovator Educator Expert and shares tools and practical teaching strategies for integrating technology in the core curriculum with other teachers around her school district. She has created curriculum for coding, robotics and 3D printing in our school. Her Ph.D. is in Computer Science, specializing in Educational Technology where she conducted research on gender equity in computer science.  Her degree has enabled her to teach several online courses to graduate students in the college of education. She teaches Instructional Design, focusing on the design of online learning environments. She enjoys helping prepare teachers for the classroom of today. Her particular areas of interest are how artificial Intelligence and gamification are impacting education.

Dr. Ian Whitacre is an Associate Professor in Elementary Mathematics Education in the School of Teacher Education at Florida State University. He studies mathematical thinking and learning, focusing on both preservice elementary teachers and K-8 students.

Matthew Acevedo

Matt Acevedo is the Executive Director of Learning Innovation and Faculty Engagement at the University of Miami, where he leads a team of instructional designers who collaborate with faculty members to enhance their teaching with learner-centered, equity-minded pedagogies and principled uses of educational technology. He also oversees the new Student Experience unit in IT and is piloting UM’s emerging efforts at exploring AI use in teaching, learning, and scholarship. His scholarly and professional interests include educational development, critical and anti-racist pedagogy, large language model use in education, and qualitative educational research. Matt holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Florida International University, where he earned the College of Arts, Sciences & Education Best Dissertation award in 2019 for his study exploring faculty members’ experiences with quality assurance audits for distance education.
